Activist investors are optimistic that Japanese companies are beginning to listen more closely to their shareholders. Is this really the case?
Constructive Engagement Investing has gained strength during the five years of PM Abe’s administration and his advocacy for strengthening corporate governance. June is the peak season for annual general meetings in Japan. Will this year see more proactive shareholder attempts to influence management?
Oasis Management has invested in Japanese companies since its founding in 2002, and it has developed a successful history of constructive engagement with management. Often, that engagement is largely quiet and behind the scenes, and welcomed by management and all stakeholders. In other cases, that engagement has become public, as Oasis has sounded the alarm on corporate governance issues. CIO Seth Fischer believes that Japanese investors’ increasing willingness to stand up and make their voices heard by voting for positive corporate governance has been influential in the changes that we are seeing.
Last May, Seth Fischer addressed the ACCJ on related topics – global M&A standards and protection of minority shareholders’ rights, especially when majority shareholders attempt an acquisition.
Come to hear this update about the state of corporate governance in Japan from one of the leading actively engaged investors working to shape decision-making at Japanese corporations.
