When Nagoya looks to the future, there’s a tendency to fixate on the bumps that lie ahead. Demographic decline, sweeping changes in the industry that makes the regional economy hum, and the great sucking sound from Tokyo are concerns for all of us who love living and working in Japan’s Motor City.
But US Consulate Principal Officer Gary Schaefer is optimistic about what the coming decades have in store for Japan’s third-largest metropolitan area. In this presentation, he’ll:
Schaefer has been the US representative in Nagoya since August 2017. His roots in the region stretch back three decades—to 1990—when he first stepped foot in a small town in Gifu Prefecture as an English teacher. He remembers the big clock on Nagoya Station, Meiji-ya’s store in Sakae, and even the last time the Dragons won the Japan Series. He will bring that kind of perspective to his first speaking engagement for the ACCJ-Chubu, which will be delivered in Japanese with simultaneous interpretation in English.
