Tackling COVID-19: The biopharmaceutical industry’s efforts to develop new vaccines and treatments

THIS IS A FREE VIRTUAL EVENT

SPEAKER: James Mayne, Ph.D., Vice President, Science Advocacy, PhRMA

HOSTING COMMITTEE: Healthcare Committee

Biopharmaceutical companies are in the midst of developing solutions to help diagnose, treat, and prevent COVID-19. Companies are scrutinizing inventories of existing research portfolio libraries of experimental medicines to identify additional potential treatments for investigation and emergency use.

As of April 8, nearly 310 clinical trials are testing COVID-19 treatments and vaccines, and 139 unique treatments are undergoing testing globally. The rapid pace at which researchers have been able to understand this novel strain of coronavirus and get medicines into human clinical trials is a testament to the lessons learned by the biopharmaceutical industry from past public health emergencies.

Join us as James Mayne, PhD, Vice President of Scientific Advocacy at the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), provides an overview of the therapies in development and explain what it takes to bring a new medicine or vaccine to patients in need.

ACCJ SME CEO Advisory Council
GUEST SPEAKERS:
James Fink, Halifax Associates
Seth Sulkin, Pacifica Capital
The global pandemic has upended normal business conditions and created tremendous challenges for landlords and tenants alike.  For tenants whose businesses are severely impacted, such as retailers and restaurants, urgent relief is needed.  The Japanese government has requested that landlords be flexible about handling requests from tenants.  That being said, landlords have large expenses as well, including debt service, maintenance and payroll. Their ability to assist tenants is limited.  This event, jointly hosted by the SME CEO Advisory Council and the Real Estate Committee, will feature two speakers with long experience in landlord/tenant relations.  James Fink of Halifax Associates, who advises many major international corporations on real estate requirements, will speak to the office market.  Seth Sulkin of Pacifica Capital, will address retailers, restaurants and hotels.

Program Committee - Chubu
Many of us are currently struggling to adjust to the various changes in business that Covid-19 has brought about.  In earlier times, it would have been easy to casually talk about your difficulties to other members before and after other ACCJ events.  However, with the move to online events and social distancing, it has become increasingly difficult to reach out to other members for assistance.  We aim to address that with the Brainstorming Event, where we will utilize Zoom's breakout rooms to share with a small group your issue and to provide possible solutions to others in your group.  If you have a problem you'd like assistance with or if you enjoy helping your fellow ACCJ members, this event is the one for you.

How It Will Work:
  • Attendees will be randomly placed into breakout rooms consisting of 4-5 people with a facilitator
  • Each Attendee will have 2min to introduce themselves and their issue
  • Within each group, attendees will discuss possible solutions to some of the issues presented
  • After 30min, we will randomize the groups once more, and repeat the above steps

IQVIA JAPAN 2020 PHARMA MARKET INSIGHTS: OUTLOOK TO 2024

Registration/Cancellation Deadline: Wednesday, April 15, (Noon)
This event will be hosted as a webinar. Instructions for joining the virtual meeting will be sent to registered attendees after the above stated deadline.

Structural shifts in Japan’s pharmaceutical market are challenging the status quo. Recent advancements in the development of breakthrough therapies are changing the way in which we treat diseases and catalyzing significant reform in government policy. Strategic opportunities—including in specialty and biologics—alongside investment in innovation and launch underline Japan’s position as the second-largest market for R&D-driven pharma companies.

However, continued pressure on healthcare spending is impacting both government policy and pharma-company strategy as a balance emerges to support patient access to newer, safer, more effective treatments. While companies that made the shift in strategy reap their rewards, those that did not are now reassessing their position.

Join this “must” event for the pharma industry at which Alan Thomas, Director of Thought Leadership at IQVIA Japan K.K., will discuss these and other issues impacting the Japan market today and in the years ahead.

HOSTED BY THE ACCJ LEGAL SERVICES & INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY COMMITTEE

The panelists will be considering your questions such as:
  • Can I temperature scan my employees and require them to submit their personal health data?
  • What steps are required to shorten workers hours, working from home and temporarily changing roles during the COVID-19 crisis?
  • Can employees’ wages be lowered for shortened work hours?
  • Do I treat part-time and contract employees differently to full time employees?
  • How do I deal with delayed performance of my supplier?
  • What legal and practical options are available to me to cancel contracts in addition to Force Majeure?
