These days institutional investors often use the expressions "Corporate Sustainability" and "ESG investing," but the definition remains unclear. The use of these terms usually is a hot topic "buzz word" by the speaker as opposed to embodying the true meaning or intention of the term itself. Almost weekly, companies produce news focusing on the connection between their output and the relevant environmental and social impact, as well as the strength of their corporate governance.
Instead, what is often highlighted by the press is primarily the negative news focused on the sensational story involving a scandal or tragedy due to the gross negligence by a certain noteworthy company. Yet, there is reason for hope as we increasingly see signs that companies, which are behaving responsibly by integrating sustainability into their operations, are having a positive impact on their corporate image. These are the companies that are going above and beyond regulatory compliance in the attempt to prove their value to key stakeholders, especially their investors.
As a concept, ESG is not new to Japan. However, the ESG framework is changing dynamically with evolution of new concepts, reporting standards and indices all trying to capture this and quantify this information.
Come to this presentation to learn what is driving the ESG revolution, what ESG investing looks like and how both companies and investors are working with these issues to present a fuller image of their risks as well as to demonstrate their intrinsic value proposition.
