4/12/2016 [Watch Online!] The Whole World is Watching: The Impact of U.S. Presidential Elections on the Global StageRead Now
***Live Video (From 12:50 p.m.): http://accj.or.jp/en/events/live-streaming-events***
At the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention, raucous crowds of demonstrators created havoc on the streets, and there was mayhem in the convention hall as Democrats struggled to put together a ticket that could defeat the Republicans in the fall general elections. The chaotic scenes were televised around the world as demonstrators chanted "The whole world is watching!" With the backdrop of two assassinations and the continuing quagmire in Vietnam, they were right. American Presidential elections are a unique spectator "sport" unlike any other in the world. This is in part driven by the lengthy nature of the process, as well as the "no holds barred" style of debate that often ensues. This year's elections are no exception, and to the eyes of the uninitiated, might seem more so than usual. Are they really? Do American elections really have global impact? Ambassador Robert M. "Skipp" Orr will provide a historical look at several key elections, how they impacted U.S. foreign policy, and what this could mean in the current election cycle.
