Event Overview:
In 2013, UNESCO added Japanese cuisine to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Since then, the popularity of Japanese sake has grown in the United States. While there are about 1,400 sake breweries in Japan, the US is home to fewer than 30, and all are run by local breweries. Yamaguchi-based Asahishuzo Co., Ltd., producer of Dassai premium sake, announced in 2017 that it is building its first brewery outside Japan. Located near the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, about 120 kilometers from New York City, the 5,000-square-meter facility will feature both production and retail space when it opens in 2020. The New York brewery was designed by Jun Mitsui, and the ACCJ Real Estate Committee has invited the architect to present his design as guests enjoy premium Dassai sake. Mitsui has collaborated with the late César Pelli, who sadly passed away on July 19. Pelli’s work includes Tokyo American Club, the international passenger terminal at Haneda Airport, and the new headquarters of Coca-Cola (Japan) Co., Ltd., as well as Mori Building Co., Ltd.’s Atago Green Hills, ARK Hills Sengokuyama Mori Tower, and the three towers of the developer’s massive new Toranomon–Azabudai project, which will transform the area near the ACCJ office. A full listing of Jun Mitsui & Associates’ projects can be found at: www.jma.co.jp/projects Kazuhiro Sakurai, president of Asahishuzo, will also be on hand to talk about the importance of quality ingredients, rice, and water, and why the New York facility is ideal for meeting the increased US demand for Japanese sake.
