4/19/2017 Promoting Innovation through Competition? A U.S.-Japan Perspective on the Prospects for Japanese Energy Market ReformsRead Now
2016 marked the introduction of full electricity retail competition in Japan, with the emergence of a variety of new electricity retailers offering bundled services, and more than 2.5 million residential customers (4.2% of total) filing to switch energy providers. More reforms are planned for 2017, beginning with the start of retail gas competition next month, as well as first-time access for demand response aggregators to the wholesale market (JEPX).
From an international perspective, how significant have Japanese energy market reforms been to date? And what can we expect from planned efforts to promote power market competition in the future? Join us for a lively lunch-time discussion with two experts in the field - Takehiko Matsuo, Secretary General of METI’s new Electricity and Gas Market Surveillance Commission (EGC), and Ben Foster, current Mansfield Fellow in Japan from the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) - both of whom will offer an update on present market reform efforts in Japan and a reflection on the future prospects of proposed reforms.
