This American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) Special Events Committee tasting—limited to 12 attendees—is a great chance to sample a number of delicious wines from Nagano Prefecture. Options at various price points represent the diversity of the grapes grown in Nagano. Known for the excellence of its merlots, sauvignon blancs, and Chardonnays, Nagano is the largest producer of domestic wine in Japan. The prefecture boasts more than 50 wineries that market wines ranging from ¥1,000 to ¥20,000 a bottle—and sometimes more. Unlike neighboring Yamanashi Prefecture, Nagano has focused on European varietals that do best in a climate with a large difference between day and night temperatures. Nagano’s mountainous terrain protects its vineyards from typhoons and mitigates Japan’s soggy rainy seasons, and some of its best wines are made at altitudes higher than 2,500 feet. About the Organizers The Nagano Wine Tasting event is being held in cooperation with the Nagano Prefectural Government and the Friends of Nagano Wine. The latter is an informal group of largely foreign residents (ACCJ members among them) who organize periodic programs showcasing Nagano wines. These events include visits to vineyards and trips to the annual festivals in Nagano, Shiojiri, and Suzaka. Thanks to the Hokuriku Shinkansen, which puts Nagano just 90 minutes from central Tokyo, the area has become a booming center for wine tourism in Japan. Junya Hanaoka, who is in charge of Nagano wine promotion in Tokyo, will lead the tasting. Hanaoka is a sommelier and co-author of the book Really Good, Nagano Wine 100: Delicious Grapes from Delicious Wine. He will be joined by Jim Foster and his daughter, Mariko, who coordinates the activities of the Friends of Nagano Wine. Jim is long-time resident of Nagano with a home on the slopes of Mount Kurohime. Mariko works in Tokyo, holds a Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 3 certification, and is working on her WSET diploma. NOTE 1: This event is ON THE RECORD. NOTE 2: If you cancel after the stated deadline, the full meeting fee will be charged to your account. Sorry, no substitutions or walk-ins. Comments are closed.
