More than one year ago, the deregulation of retail electricity sales started, and almost a year ago natural gas retail sales were liberalized. During this time, many customers have moved, especially from the traditional electric power companies to the traditional city gas companies (who are now electricity retailers as well). How are things going for the little guys? Overlooked in much of the media coverage of gas/electricity retail deregulation are the innovative efforts and offerings by smaller retailers, including some exciting entrants from the U.S. How about the investment side? What are the unique sales points and key success factors for the winners from Japan’s experiment with gas/electricity retail competition? Access to capital? Prior domestic energy market positions? Global networks and experience? Bundled services? This panel will provide a view of the challenges - from recruiting new customers to securing power supply - as well as the opportunities that new retailers see in Japan’s recently deregulated gas/electricity market, in an industry still dominated by incumbents.
