A record 19.74 million foreign tourists visited Japan in 2015, an increase of 47.3 percent from the previous year. In 2016, the number grew by 21.8 percent to 24 million. With the Rugby World Cup in 2019, and the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, this unprecedented growth is expected to continue.
Tourism is a proven engine for economic growth and one that the Japanese government realizes can be a significant contributor to the country's GDP. What is the government's tourism strategy? What concrete measures to achieve policy targets do they have in place? What challenges are expected along the way to achieving those targets? The Tourism Industry Committee is very proud to welcome Japan Tourism Agency Commissioner Akihiko Tamura as a speaker. He will provide an overview of the government's vision for Japanese tourism policy and future initiatives.
