11/8/2017 Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA) and the Changing Influence on the Economy and Political LandscapeRead Now
Event Overview:
From global trade, finance, insurance, and politics, the 694 regional agricultural cooperatives and their federations known as “JA” maintain significant influence in the Japanese economy and politics. In fact, JA collected more than 11 million signatures against TPP and was nearly successful in blocking the agreement. Recently, however, there have been signs of change due to a rapidly declining farming population. Prime Minister Abe has proposed several reforms designed to reduce its influence and modernize the farming sector. Join us as we hear from Dr. Kazuhito Yamashita for a discussion on JA’s scope, activities, and evolving influence on the future of Japan. This event is not just for those in the food and agriculture industry, but also for anyone interested in trade policy, politics, and finance. This is sure to be a fascinating discussion on one of the largest and most influential economic institutions in all of Japan. About the Speaker: After a career in the Japanese government, Dr. Yamashita is one of the foremost experts on Japanese trade policy and regional and agricultural issues. Dr. Yamashita advocated TPP 11 or TPP without the U.S. well before the current administration. As a research director of the Canon Institute of Global Studies, he has written and spoken globally on various related topics. He holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Tokyo and Masters of Applied Economics and Public Administration from the University of Michigan.
