Event Overview: The EU General Data Protection Regulations (“GDPR”), the most comprehensive reform of data protection law ever envisaged in the EU’s history, finally became effective on May 25, 2018. It was reported on the eve of the effective date that nearly 80 % of Japanese companies affected still had not completed compliance implementation. If you are not yet compliant, you should start immediately. But no need to panic. First it is important to understand what GDPR really means to you and how it affects your business. The presentation will include the basics of GDPR, how GDPR affects Japanese companies, enforcement trends, and the recent discussion and agreement between the EU Commission and Japan Personal Information Protection Commission regarding the personal data transfer from EEA to Japan. About the Speaker: Michiru Takahashi is a lawyer with considerable experience in the areas of intellectual property. Her practice focuses on trademark, unfair competition, and copyright issues, including infringement litigation and trademark prosecution. In addition, Michiru frequently counsels clients on privacy and data protection issues. With more than 10 years of experience in this practice, she regularly advises foreign clients on Japanese personal information protection law, including the development of internal policies and measures against privacy breach cases. She also has significant experience advising Japanese multinational clients to assist their global compliance with data protection laws in various jurisdictions. Recently she regularly advises Japanese clients on GDPR compliance and international transfer of personal data.
