Event Overview:
Stealing digital content, such as movies, music, and software, is much more prevalent in Japan than you might suspect. Not only does this threaten the content creators and damage the entire distribution system, it also supports established criminal elements. In addition, it is increasingly a method of spreading high-risk ads and viruses that can threaten the privacy and safety of unsuspecting users.

The Intellectual Property Committee invites you to this informative session on digital piracy in Japan and Asia–Pacific at which our speakers, Mike Ellis and Marc Fuoti, will discuss:

•    The nature and extent of digital piracy in Japan and the region
•    The role of the internet in exacerbating the problem
•    The broader implications of digital piracy
•    How the Motion Picture Association (MPA) is working with governments and                  businesses to tackle piracy

About the Speakers
Michael C. Ellis leads the MPA’s global mission to advance and support the film, television, and streaming content industries in the Asia–Pacific region. Mike is responsible for all aspects of the operations, policy, and personnel in 14 territories. As a specialist in facilitating industry–government cooperation worldwide, he has successfully forged strategic partnerships and alliances that promote and protect the commercial and creative interests of Asia–Pacific screen communities in the digital age. His accomplishments have helped gain market access for MPA member studios and strengthened the protection of intellectual property rights (IPR) throughout the region.

A lawyer qualified in Hong Kong, England, and Wales, Ellis joined the MPA in 1999. Prior to that, he enjoyed a distinguished career in law enforcement that spanned two decades, first in the British Police and then the Royal Hong Kong Police. An authority on copyright law, organized crime, and IPR in Asia–Pacific and beyond, Ellis works to raise awareness of the film and television industries and their economic contributions to global economies. In addition to his legal qualifications, he holds an MBA.

Marc Fuoti has more than 30 years of experience managing businesses in Japan, including as Senior Vice President at McCann-Erickson, Senior Vice President Asia–Pacific at 20th Century Fox, and Managing Director at Universal Pictures Japan. Since January 2007, Fuoti has been running his own consulting firm, Big Picture International K.K., working with large corporates as well as smaller innovative companies. He has been a senior advisor to the MPA since 2015. He has also served as chair of several ACCJ committees and sat on the board as a Governor and a Vice President. He continues to work closely with the Japanese government and US trade representatives on issues involving bilateral trade, regulations, and business relations.
