Event Overview:
Bill Overholt has recently published a new book exploring China’s strengths, weaknesses and prospects from different angles. The book challenges much of the received wisdom about China’s fundamentals and about the Xi Jinping administration. What's going on in China affects all capital markets and alternative investments, especially infrastructure in Asia. Come to this event for the presentation of an alternative thesis about where China can and will move going forward. In 1993, Overholt published The Rise of China: How Economic Reform is Creating a New Superpower, a controversial forecast of success based on the its emulation of the earlier Asian miracles; that forecast was initially ridiculed, then later acclaimed as prescient. This new book, China’s Crisis of Success, argues that China is like an entrepreneur whose business success reaches a threshold where continued success can require organizational transformation, without which stagnation or failure ensue. Above all, success has created an exponential rise in the complexity of economic and political issues. China’s leadership has responded with a brilliant plan of economic transformation but has political problems with implementation of key reforms. Xi Jinping’s position in managing this crisis has been drastically misunderstood by most commentators. He does not necessarily have policy power proportionate to his many titles. Moreover, U.S. foreign policy has recently undergone a bipartisan hardening based on a serious misinterpretation of China’s response to the problems of political complexity. The presentation triggers debate about such issues.
