Event Overview: Join us for the first in a series of events focused around the six enablers of workforce productivity. On July 12, the Independent Business Committee is spotlighting "corporate culture" as an enabler of workforce productivity with a special focus on caregivers in the workplace. As the fastest-aging society in the world, Japan is experiencing many issues related to caregiving, such as taking care of one’s parents while childrearing and working. For many, caring from a distance for parents who live in remote areas of the country is a critical issue—not to mention those who live just a bike-ride away. And corporate cultures must adjust to ensure workers have the support necessary to continue building their careers as they address family responsibilities. This is why Mieko Akutsu, based on the experience of caring for her own parents, founded UPTREE in 2012. This nonprofit organization supports family caregiving and offers information and education for caregivers and workplaces. It holds regular informal meetings called “Caregivers’ Cafe,” has published a “caregivers’ notebook” in which statuses can be recorded and key information shared, and provides educational lectures. Join us for an overview of the current situation of family caregiving in Japan, as well as the challenges and needs in the corporate context. You will also learn solutions for balancing caregiving while being productive at work, and will gain a better understanding of the future issues you will likely experience later in life.
