Event Overview

Japan’s legal services landscape consists of various legal professionals who advise and support individuals and businesses in Japan in different ways. Yet, it can be difficult to understand just what each of these professionals does and how they can help with your individual and business legal needs.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Japan Legal Services and IP (LS&IP) Committee will hold an interactive panel discussion with two gyoseishoshi (administrative scriveners) and one bengoshi (lawyer) to help you make sense of the Japanese legal system. The panel will begin with a general introduction to the players on the Japanese legal landscape. The gyoseishoshi on the panel will then deep dive into the wide range of services they offer and the ways in which gyoseishoshi assist individual and corporate clients in Japan. They will also explain the scope of work of shihoushoshi (preparation of legal document).

The panel will be moderated by Catherine O’Connell, a gaiben (foreign-registered attorney) and co-chair of the LS&IP Committee. This will be an interactive event with questions and intel welcome from the audience.

Panelists will include:

Maika Kawaguchi
A bengoshi at Squire Patton Boggs Tokyo Office. Kawaguchi has expertise in international trade and specializes in domestic and international transactions including mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, corporate restructuring and reorganizations, joint ventures, labor and employment, litigation, and other dispute resolution. She began her legal career at a prominent Tokyo-based law firm in 2006 and joined Mamiya Law Offices in 2008. She joined Squire Patton Boggs in 2014. She completed her Master of Laws degree at the University of Michigan Law School in 2017 and recently returned to the Tokyo office after a one-year assignment in the Los Angeles office of Squire Patton Boggs. Kawaguchi is a member of the Tokyo Bar Association. Squire Patton Boggs is a Corporate Sustaining Member of the ACCJ.

Jeffrey (“Jeff”) Jackson
As founder of Jackson Sogo Gyoseishoshi Law Office, and the first and only Westerner admitted as a gyoseishoshi in Japan, Jackson focuses on Japanese corporate, immigration, employment, labor, and family law matters. Before becoming locally licensed, he practiced as a US lawyer for a decade in Tokyo and Silicon Valley. Jackson is an Individual Member of the ACCJ.

Sane Sekiya
A gyoseishoshi, Sekiya runs Tri-Star Legal Office and is an immigration lawyer/attorney in administrative procedures, appointed under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. She is also a nation-certified career consultant, and her major fields of practice are visa/naturalization application, company setup/business consultation, business license application, and wills/estate planning. She also provides services related to international estate succession for disposition of a deceased’s estate in and outside Japan. Sekiya is an Individual Member of the ACCJ and vice-chair of the Tourism Industry Committee.
